Brown City falls to Capac in district final

Photo by Susan Morse LAKEVILLE — Capac took home the hardware last Saturday after taking a 3-2 win over Brown City. Michael Foster earned the win for Capac, giving up seven hits while striking out three.

Forster tallied three singles on the game. Andrew Sams had a double and two runs. Josh Palazzolo had a single and an RBI. Brad Schaefer added a single and Jimmy Schroeder had an RBI.

Capac had defeated Marlette 1-0 in 11 innings in the semifinal to advance to the final. Jimmy Schroeder surrendered two hits and four strike outs and Sams fanned 13 and allowed a hit and six walks. Foster and Jacob Sawyers each had a single. Schroeder had two singles and Joe Peters scored once.

“We really had great pitching in both games,” said Capac coach Barry Geliske. “The defense was outstanding and made the plays when the pressure was on in the late innings of both games. The district had quality pitching and I am happy we came out of the district. Marlette and Brown City player their hearts out. Moving forward, we need our bats to come alive.”

Host LakeVille bowed out in the morning semifinal losing to Brown City 10-4.

Capac played Almont in the Div. 3 regional semifinal at Brown City on Saturday at noon. The championship game will follow. – K.R.

Broncos topped by Yale in district final

North Branch was handed a heartbreaking 3-2 loss against Yale in the district final last Saturday.

North Branch led 2-0 through the first five innings before Yale scored on in the sixth and two in the seventh to steal the win.

Scott Helton tossed 6.2 innings, fanning six and allowing seven hits, a run and a walk. Braden Kronz threw 0.1 innings of relief, surrendering two hits, two runs and a walk.

Nate Farnsworth and Wylie Swoish had a pair of hits and a run each. Chandler Russell had a hit and an RBI and Gerrid Rutledge added a hit.

North Branch took down Cros-Lex 3-0 in the semifinal. The Broncos scored one in the first and two in the second. Kaden Maynard retired 11 batters over 5.2 innings and gave up two hits and two walks. Helton struck out two over 1.1 innings.

Swoish had two hits, an RBI and a run to lead the Broncos offense. Reilly Roach and Quinten Dorner added a hit and an RBI each. Colton Maher had a hit and crossed home once and Rutledge added a hit.

Imlay City fell to Yale 9-3 in the other semifinal to be knocked out of district play. Andrew Nadrowski was 3-for- 4 from the plate and Brandon Rugenstein was 2-of-3. Davyn Wilson, Ricky Guerrero, Noah Galbraith and Logan Wilson added a hit each.

Yale moved on to regionals at Detroit Country Day on Saturday where it faced St. Mary’s in the semifinal. The winner played either Armada or Algonac for the regional title. — K.R.
