Pirates triumph

The Pirates collected a pair of victories in North Central Thumb League play last week.

The latest triumph came on Thursday night when the Lady Pirates stopped Akron-Fairgrove in four games 25-9, 19-25, 25-13, 25-14.

“Tonight, the girls played tough,” noted Lisa Smith, Peck coach. “After a mistake has been made, they move on, which is what we have been trying to work on this season. “We have also been working on communication and tonight’s match definitely showed our communication and teamwork.”

The Pirates had key plays from all six starters. Abbey Bullis had 10 serve receptions and 14 digs and Emma Engler added 14 digs and seven assists. Other contributions came from Morgan Winiarski (7 assts., 4 aces), Samantha Bissett (7 kills, 4 aces), Caryn Stevens (5 kills), and Faith Haener (7 kills).

Last Tuesday night, the Pirates breezed past Caseville (25-6, 25-20, 25-6). Bullis had 20 digs and Haener added seven kills and six aces to lead the way. Other stats came from Winiarski (3 aces, 5 assts.), Engler (7 assts.), and Jorden Lodge (5 aces, 2 kills).


The Brown City Green Devils, five-time defending champions, began Greater Thumb Conference-East volleyball play, like usual, with another victory, stopping Harbor Beach, 3-1, on Tuesday night.

After losing the opening set (25-27), the Lady Green Devils rallied to take the next three (25-19, 27-25, 25-20) in the East match.

Kendal Muxlow and Ann Schlaud led at the net for Brown City with 26 and 18 kills, respectively. Muxlow also finished with a .323 hitting average and had 17 digs. Alexis Wiltsie, in the meantime, turned in 26 assists and Lauren Woods had 17 digs.

Sept. 8 Brown City played in the Cros-Lex tournament splitting with Marlette 17-35, 25-21, then lost to Lutheran North 14-25, 17-25 and St. Clair 16-25, 9-25. Brown City then beat L'Anse Cruese 21-25, 25-15, 15-13 before another loss to St. Clair 22-25, 25-16, 8-15.

Muxlow had 41 kills and five aces, Grace Schlaud had 39 kills and four aces and Wiltse 82 assists and nine aces. — D.B./L.P.


The Red Raiders were slated to face Memphis Thursday. No scores were available.

On Sept. 11, Marlette played Capac (no scores posted) and on Sept. 8 lost to Lutheran North 16-25, 16-25, beat St. Clair 25-12, 25-16.

On Sept. 6. Marlette lost to Harbor Beach 21-25, 15-25, 12-25.

The Broncos dominated Almont in its first-ever Blue Water Area Conference game, winning 25-7, 25-6, 25-8. The Lady Broncos grabbed an 8-0 lead behind the serving of Faith Kotur and never looked back.

“Almont played with a lot of heart throughout the night and in the third set pulled within 17-14 before North Branch scored eight of the last 12 points to win the match,” said North Branch coach Jim Fish. “We were excited for our first league game and played very well against a good Almont team.”

Allyson Severance pounded out 16 kills, five aces and had five digs. Autumn Deshetsky put up 24 assists and eight digs. MacKenzie DeLong and Alison Bryce added five kills each. Kotur had three aces and two kills. Jade Anrzejewski chipped in two aces and three digs. Breann June added four aces and Hannah Bader had five digs.

North Branch, 23-2, was at the Bay City Western Tournament on Saturday and is at Richmond on Wednesday. — K.R.
